Ho Chi Minh & Hoi An Amongst Top 10 Cities for Expats to Live in Asia

Cities with a high index of urban quality of life and extremely safe, are part of the top 10 of the best cities in Asia to emigrate from the western hemisphere, including Singapore, Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok, among others.

10. Singapore

The largest city in the country and a global financial hub, it is an excellent destination to migrate, almost all expatriates in Singapore positively value political stability and feel personally safe there, Singapore even ranks second worldwide , only surpassed by Tokyo. Singapore performs well in the Finance and Housing Index, migrants say their disposable household income is more than they need to cover their expenses.

The city-state achieves excellent results for this factor even though the cost of living appears to be very high. Nearly three out of five expats assess that the cost of living in Singapore is quite high compared to the world average.

9. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Nearly three out of four expats rate the cost of living in Ho Chi Minh City positively and despite the overall cost of living having risen, it is still affordable – in fact, expats say disposable household income is more of what they need to cover expenses. Locals attitude towards foreign residents is generally friendly, furthermore, expats assure that housing is not only affordable but also easy to find.

Expats are also very satisfied with their work in general, they seem particularly happy with the state of the local economy and their work-life balance.

8. Chiang Mai, Thailand

The old city preserves vestiges of walls and moats from the period when it was a cultural and religious center. Many of the foreigners who work in Thailand are sent by companies from their countries. The working conditions of expatriates are always very good,  the average salary is around € 2,500 per month, which is more than enough to cover the basic needs. 

7. Tokyo, Japan

The Japanese capital ranks favorably on the Urban Quality of Life Index. It has a great rating in terms of transport and personal safety factor. Almost all expats feel safe in Tokyo, and they are happy with its public transport infrastructure.

6. Bangkok, Thailand

The Thai capital is in the top 5 on the Finance and Housing Index. Two out of three expats feel that their disposable household income is more than enough to pay for everything they need. Expats are satisfied with the affordability of housing in Bangkok considering that housing is also easy to find. Local residents are friendly and happy with their social life in Bangkok.

5. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Housing is affordable, plus expats say it’s easy to find. According to a survey, three out of four respondents are satisfied with their financial situation and the local cost of living, in addition, they agree with the idea that it is safe and affordable to live there.

4. Beijing, China

The city does well on indexes related to finance and housing, about two in five expats say that it is easy to find housing in Beijing and they are satisfied with the cost of living, compared to other cities in Asia, moreover, expats are generally satisfied with their jobs.

3. Hong Kong

Despite being a city with extremely high costs of living, migrants say it is easy to find new friends and they are happy with their social life in Hong Kong.

2. Hoi An, Vietnam

It is a romantic, sensational and charming place, it is remarkably affordable, has wonderful people and beautiful architecture. Hoi An is a strikingly beautiful city that allows you to live like a king on a poor man’s budget. Expats note that houses and apartments in Hoi An are incredibly cheap. 

1. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto offers a good living environment with diverse geographical attractions, historical and cultural heritages, and a well-matured locality. It is known as an international city where many foreign students and expatriates have historically lived. There are international schools throughout the city that provide a high-quality educational environment. There are also several medical facilities offering foreign language services so that non-Japanese speaking foreign residents can live without worry.

The city of Kyoto is actively attracting foreign companies with its public support systems and its ability to support foreign expatriates through public institutions and private entities.
